Students of The Polytechnic, Ibadan in Oyo are protesting the decision to rename the institution after a former governor of old Oyo.
On June 26, Seyi Makinde, the governor of Oyo, renamed The Polytechnic Ibadan in Oyo after Omololu Olunloyo, a late former governor of the state.
At the commendation service for the late Olunloyo, held at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, Makinde said the renaming was to honour Olunloyo for his service to the institution as the pioneer rector.
He added that Olunloyo contributed his quota to the development of the state during and after his short tenure as the governor.
Makinde described the deceased as a technocrat, a true leader, a patriotic citizen and a man with a deep sense of culture.
However, the renaming has stirred disturbance among students of the polytechnic who took to the streets on protest on Tuesday.
The protest, which began on the morning of July 1, saw hundreds of students block the main entrance gates of the institution and the busy Sango-Eleyele Road.
This left many commuters, residents, and even staff stranded, disrupting traffic flow in the state capital.
As a result, the Oyo State Road Transport Management Agency (OYRTMA) has advised motorists to use alternative routes to avoid the affected areas.
Olunloyo is the first Ibadan indigene to govern old Oyo State, serving a brief tenure between October and December 1983.
