The Youth Assembly of Nigeria (YAN) yesterday issued a seven-day ultimatum to Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke and the House of Assembly to sign into law, a bill to tackle exploitation by landlords and house agents concerning rent.
The Speaker of YAN, Hammed Fatomi, addressing reporters at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Correspondents’ Chapel, Osun State, lamented over the unchecked activities of landlords and house agents, noting that they were making life unbearable for residents.
According to him, ‘’we are speaking with one voice to end the unchecked exploitation in the housing sector that continues to plague the people of Osun State.
“Our cities and towns have become a hotbed for fraudulent and exploitative practices by house agents and landlords, who operate freely without regulation.
‘’Students, job seekers, newly- employed civil servants, newly-weds and young professionals narrate stories that are heart breaking over the activities of these greedy and dubious agents and landlords.”
Fatomi lamented that government had not taken any action to curb the activities of the agents and landlords.
The body demanded for immediate implementation, the Agency Regulatory Bill passed by the assembly, constitution of a regulatory body to oversee house agents’ and landlords’ activities in Osun State.
“We are appealing to Osun State Government to treat this matter within seven days with the urgency it deserves. We had previously scheduled a peaceful protest, but we postponed that protest in the light of the political tension that surrounds the councils.”
