One of the political developments that has profoundly unsettled Governor Alex Otti in recent times is the emergence of Dr. Eric Chinemeucheya Opah as the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Many may not have known Dr. Eric Opah as an active politician before now, but Governor Otti understands the strength and implications of his emergence. With Dr. Opah on the ballot, the political landscape has changed dramatically. For the first time, the Governor is confronted with a challenger whose credentials, competence, integrity, and acceptability speak for themselves.

Any leader who has chosen deception, falsehood, and propaganda over empathy, honesty, and good governance naturally dreads facing an opponent who possesses unquestionable character, proven competence, intellectual depth, and the confidence of the electorate. Dr. Eric Opah embodies these qualities, and that is precisely why his candidacy has become a source of anxiety within the Labour Party.

Governor Otti understands that elections are no longer won by media propaganda or carefully choreographed public relations campaigns and white lies, They are won through credibility, vision, compassion, and the confidence of the people. In Dr. Eric Opah, Abians see a leader whose life, accomplishments, and character reflect these enduring values.

While the present administration of Dr. Alex Otti is completely disconnected from the welfare and needs of the people, Dr. Eric Opah believes that the first responsibility of any government is to protect the welfare, dignity, security, and prosperity of its citizens. His vision is to built on inclusive governance, economic empowerment, transparency, and policies that directly improve the quality of life of ordinary Abians.

While the Alex Otti administration has denied our retirees their gratuities and neglected their welfare and pensions, Dr. Opah has consistently emphasized wealth creation, entrepreneurship, improved workers, and policies designed to raise the standard of living of every Abian. He has also pledged to implement an improved welfare package for retirees who devoted their productive years to the service of the state.

At a time when many residents continue to struggle with rising transportation costs due to excessive taxation of motorists by the Alex Otti administration, Dr. Opah has pledged to introduce a subsidized transportation programme for civil servants, provide free transportation for students and teachers, and reduce the heavy tax burden on transport operators, with the objective of easing the financial pressure on families and businesses.

While the Otti administration has introduced and deepened the politics of division and bitterness across the state, Dr. Eric Opah stands out as a unifying force whose candidacy is bringing together people from different political parties, religious backgrounds, and ethnic groups under a common vision of a more united, peaceful, and prosperous Abia.

The welfare of teachers and students remains central to Dr. Opah’s educational agenda. He has pledged to improve teachers’ welfare, increase their salaries, strengthen the education sector, and ensure that those entrusted with shaping future generations receive the support, respect, and recognition they deserve.

While Governor Otti’s style of administration has been criticized as high-handed and lacking in openness, transparency, and accountability, Dr. Opah has promised to operate an open, transparent, and accountable government in which Abians will have greater access to information and a meaningful voice in how public resources are managed and utilized.

While officials of the current administration have been accused of violating their oath of office by allegedly using public resources to develop private business interests, thereby encouraging corruption and abuse of public trust, Dr. Eric Opah has pledged that public funds will be dedicated solely to the development of the state and the welfare of its people. Prudent financial management, institutional accountability, and people-centred governance will form the foundation of his administration. Under his leadership, the welfare of every Abian will occupy the centre of government policy, while agriculture, education, healthcare, infrastructure, youth and women empowerment, industrialization, and entrepreneurship will receive priority attention.

While the Otti administration lacks a comprehensive agenda for youth development, Dr. Opah has articulated a clear vision for building a generation of responsible, innovative, skilled, and self-reliant young people equipped to lead and contribute meaningfully to society.

While the Labour Party administration diverts funds meant for the development and effective functioning of local governments, Dr. Eric Opah has pledged to strengthen local government administration by ensuring financial autonomy, institutionalizing good governance, promoting fiscal responsibility, encouraging community participation, and making strategic investments in rural infrastructure, agriculture, healthcare, education, and local economic development.

Dr. Eric Opah is a wealth creator, an experienced administrator, an empathetic leader, a youthful achiever, and result-oriented professional who has built and managed businesses across continents, His emergence has transformed the governorship race into a genuine contest of ideas, competence, vision, and leadership capacity. More importantly, his candidacy offers Abians renewed hope for a future built on purposeful governance and sustainable development.

With Dr. Opah in the race, the 2027 governorship election is shaping up to be far more than a contest between political parties. It is becoming a defining choice between continuing a government characterized by deception, fraud, lack of accountability, divisiveness, governance without empathy, and the prioritization of revenue generation over the welfare of citizens, or embracing a new vision anchored on competence, compassion, transparency, accountability, and purposeful leadership, which Dr. Eric Opah has pledged to institutionalize in the governance of Abia State.
