The Nigerian Senate has adopted a motion sponsored by Sen. Osita Izunaso, representing Orlu Senatorial Zone, calling for urgent federal intervention to address devastating flooding and gully erosion threatening 9 communities in three LGAs of the zone.
Among the affected communities include Obodoukwu, Urualla, Ụmụchima, Ụmụeshi, Isiekenesi, Orsu-Obodo, Oguta-Amaeshi, Nnebukwu, and Nkwesi Autonomous Communities in Ideato North, Ideato South and Oguta LGAs of Imo state.
The motion draws attention to the destructive impact of flooding and erosion on communities across Ideato and other parts of Orlu Zone, where homes, roads, farmlands, businesses and livelihoods face growing threats from environmental degradation.
Following the adoption of the motion, the Senate resolved to urge the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), the Federal Ministry of Works and other relevant agencies, working in collaboration with the Imo State Government and affected local government areas, to undertake immediate emergency interventions at identified sites.
The proposed interventions include rescue operations (where necessary), the provision of relief materials, drainage improvements, road rehabilitation and erosion-control measures, in line with the respective mandates of the agencies involved.
The Senate also called for the affected locations to be considered for a coordinated, long-term rehabilitation and ecological restoration programme, supported by appropriate federal funding.
Relevant Senate committees are to report back to the Senate on implementation within three months.
The resolution highlights the need for coordinated action to address both the immediate dangers confronting affected residents and the underlying environmental problems threatening the long-term safety and economic stability of these communities.
For residents of Obodoukwu, Urualla, Ụmụchima, Ụmụeshi, Osina, Akpulu, Ụmụchima, Ụmụeshi, Isiekenesi, Orsu-Obodo, Oguta-Amaeshi, Nnebukwu, Nkwesi and neighbouring communities, consequences of unchecked erosion and flooding extend beyond damaged infrastructure.
They affect access to roads, agricultural productivity, local commerce, community safety and the ability of families to live and work without fear of further destruction.
The motion places the plight of these communities before the relevant federal authorities and establishes a framework for emergency response, longer-term rehabilitation and legislative oversight.
As implementation proceeds, affected communities will look to the relevant agencies and levels of government to translate the Senate’s resolution into timely, practical interventions that protect lives, restore damaged infrastructure and prevent further environmental devastation.
