A wave of violence that looks like a cult war shook the Anambra State capital on Sunday, August 30, 2026, as unidentified gunmen shot dead two persons at separate locations, including popular master of ceremonies (MC) and roadshow entertainer, Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Aiza.”
The killings have sparked fresh concerns over security in Awka, with the Anambra State Police Command confirming the attacks and launching an intensified manhunt for the perpetrators.
According to the Police, the assailants, believed to be three unidentified persons travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, carried out the attacks at different locations within the city before fleeing the scenes.
The Command said its operatives responded to distress calls and immediately mobilised to the affected areas, where the bodies of the victims were recovered along Capital City Road, Amaenyi, and S.M. Okeke Street, Amaikwo.
The victims were subsequently taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.
In a statement issued on Monday, August 31, 2026, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, identified one of the deceased as Isaac Nwosu, popularly known as “Azia,” while the identity of the second victim had yet to be established.
Police operatives also recovered ₦7,550 in cash, one Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the crime scenes.
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a direct affront to the peace and security of the state.
The Commissioner consequently directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, Awka, for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The Command also disclosed that it had intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence gathering across Awka and adjoining communities as security operatives work to identify and apprehend the suspects.
Nwosu’s death has particularly sent shockwaves through Awka’s entertainment community, where he was a familiar and much-loved figure.
The deceased was widely known for his distinctive style as a master of ceremonies, master of announcements and roadshow entertainer, earning recognition for his humour, lively personality and years of involvement in entertainment activities across the city.
His killing has left colleagues, friends and residents mourning the loss of a prominent entertainer whose voice and presence had become familiar at events and social gatherings across Awka.
Meanwhile, the Police have appealed to residents, community leaders, motorists, business owners and other members of the public who may have witnessed the attacks or possess credible information about the suspects, their movements or the silver-coloured Toyota Corolla allegedly used in the operation to contact the authorities.
The Command assured members of the public that any information provided would be treated with utmost confidentiality.
The Police further stressed that community cooperation remained critical to effective policing, urging residents to provide timely and credible information that could assist security agencies in apprehending the perpetrators and preventing further attacks.
