Elder Onwe Ubochi, has reportedly been murdered by unidentified assailants in Osege, Umuogudu Oshia Ngbo Community, in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
DrumAfricanews reports that Elder Ubochi was killed shortly after participating in a prayer session and endorsement of two All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidates ahead of the 2027 elections.
The elderly man was said to have led other community elders in prayers for Tochukwu Ogalagu, the APGA candidate for Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency, and Chikaodili Ojimba, the party’s candidate for Ebonyi North Senatorial District, during a political consultation on August 17, 2026.
According to Ogalagu, Ubochi was hale and hearty when he participated in the consultation and prayer session. He was reportedly captured on camera performing his role as one of the elders who endorsed the APGA candidates.
The elderly man reportedly trekked home alone after the meeting. He was allegedly waylaid by unidentified assailants, abducted and killed while returning to his residence.
His family reportedly searched for him throughout the night before finding his body inside a stream located some distance from the road leading to his compound.
Inasmuch as the circumstances surrounding the killing have not been established, and no suspect has been publicly identified, Ogalagu said Ubochi was found fully clothed and with body inside the stream.
Ogalagu said the police had been notified of the incident and that Ubochi’s remains had been deposited in a mortuary pending further procedures.
He called for a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances of the murder and identify those responsible.
The APGA candidate alleged that the killing could be connected to political threats previously issued in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency.
He, however, did not provide details of the alleged threats or evidence linking any individual or political group to Ubochi’s death.
Ubochi’s murder has heightened concerns among APGA supporters in the constituency as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections continue.
Ogalagu urged party members to remain calm and vigilant while allowing security agencies to investigate the incident.
He also expressed sympathy to Ubochi’s immediate family and said the APGA family in Ebonyi/Ohaukwu Federal Constituency would support them during the period of mourning.
Ogalagu condemned the killing as a serious criminal act and said those responsible should face prosecution if investigations establish their involvement.
On his part, Chikaodili Ojimba, the APGA candidate for Ebonyi North Senatorial District, has also been identified as one of the candidates involved in the August 17 political consultation.
Ojimba joined APGA after leaving the All Progressives Congress and has been campaigning for the Ebonyi North Senate seat ahead of the 2027 election.
Authorities have yet to publicly announce arrests or disclose a confirmed motive for the killing. The investigation is expected to determine whether Ubochi’s participation in the APGA consultation was connected to his death or whether the murder resulted from another cause.
