The compulsory national service to his father land, ended in tragedy for 27-year-old Okebaram Stanley Chimaroke, a former Students’ Union Government (SUG) President of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, Imo State.

His mysterious disappearance and death in Nembe, Bayelsa State, have generated outrage, leaving family, friends, fellow corps members, and the wider student community bewildered and demanding answers as security operatives work to unravel the inexplicable occurrence.

Chimaroke, a Civil Engineering graduate serving under the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), was deployed to Nembe Local Government Area, one of Bayelsa State’s riverine communities. He was reported missing after colleagues could no longer reach him on the evening of July 24, 2026.

NDV learned that repeated calls to his mobile phone went unanswered, prompting concern among fellow corps members. The incident was reported to the Bayelsa State Police Command on July 25, leading to a search operation involving security personnel and members of the local community.

Days later, the search ended in heartbreak. His body was recovered from a body of water in Nembe, bringing a tragic end to days of uncertainty but opening a fresh wave of questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Although reports circulating among corps members and on social media have suggested that he may have been attacked before his body was found in the water, neither the Bayelsa State Police Command nor the NYSC has confirmed those claims. Police have maintained that investigations are ongoing and that the cause of death will only be determined after the completion of their inquiries.

The NYSC in Bayelsa State has remained silent. Repeated calls to officials were not answered, while official communication channels have not provided detailed information. However, an official confided in our reporter that the NYSC has decided not to issue further statements as the Police and other security agencies are investigating the matter.

The case has since attracted widespread public attention, with growing calls for a thorough and transparent investigation.

For many who knew Chimaroke, the tragedy is difficult to reconcile with the life he lived.

As President of the Students’ Union Government of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, during the 2022/2023 academic session, he built a reputation as an outspoken advocate for students’ welfare and campus development. Friends and former classmates remember him as approachable, disciplined, and deeply committed to service, qualities that continued to define him after graduation.

News of his death spread quickly across student circles, triggering an outpouring of grief from former colleagues, classmates, and members of the NYSC community, many of whom took to social media to describe him as a young leader whose potential was cut short.

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) also mourned his passing. In a statement signed by the President of the Senate of NANS, Distinguished Senator Ibeabuchi Moses Onyia (IBB), the association described the incident as a painful loss to the Nigerian student movement and called for a comprehensive investigation.

While noting that allegations of foul play remained unverified, the association urged security agencies to investigate every aspect of the case and provide the deceased’s family with timely information.

It also appealed to the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the NYSC Directorate, and the Bayelsa State Government to ensure that those responsible, if any criminal act is established, are identified and brought to justice.

The statement read in part: “The Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) received, with profound shock and deep sorrow, news of the death of Comrade Stanley Chimaroke Okebaram, a distinguished Senator of this hallowed chamber and past President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, for the 2022/2023 academic session.

“Comrade Stanley was, at the time of his passing, serving the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Bayelsa State, a season of service he embraced with the same dedication, discipline, and patriotism that defined his years as a student leader. His death, coming while in active service to his nation, is a loss that strikes at the very heart of the Nigerian student movement and the wider corps community.

“It has been alleged, in reports reaching the Senate, that Comrade Stanley was killed and his body dumped into a river in Bayelsa State. The Senate treats these allegations with the utmost seriousness and grave concern. While we await official confirmation of the full facts, we insist that this troubling allegation be neither ignored nor swept aside, and that it forms a central focus of the investigation.

“On behalf of the Senate of the National Association of Nigerian Students, and indeed the entire Nigerian student community, I hereby convey our deepest condolences to the family, friends, colleagues, and the management and student body of the Federal Polytechnic, Nekede, the NYSC family in Bayelsa State, and all who knew and worked with Comrade Stanley. We mourn with you, and we grieve as one family united in loss.”

“The Senate of NANS demands, in the strongest and most unambiguous terms, that the circumstances surrounding the death of Comrade Stanley Chimaroke Okebaram be thoroughly, promptly, and transparently investigated. We call on the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Directorate, and all other relevant security and regulatory agencies in Bayelsa State and at the federal level to immediately commence a diligent inquiry into the circumstances of his death.

“The Senate insists that no stone be left unturned in establishing the true and complete facts of this matter, and that any persons found culpable, should foul play or negligence be established, be brought to justice without fear or favour. Nigerian students and corps members deserve nothing less than the full protection of the law and the assurance that their lives and safety are valued while in service to their fatherland.

“We further call on the NYSC Management and the Bayelsa State Government to extend full cooperation to investigators, to provide the family of the deceased with timely and accurate information, and to ensure that the welfare and safety of corps members serving across the state is urgently reviewed and strengthened.

“The Senate of NANS shall not relent in monitoring developments on this matter and shall continue to demand accountability until justice is served and the truth is fully established. We reiterate our expectation of a professional, timely, and public response from the relevant authorities.”

Beyond the circumstances surrounding Chimaroke’s death, the incident has once again drawn attention to the safety of corps members posted to remote communities; particularly riverine areas where difficult terrain, limited communication networks, and delayed emergency response remain persistent challenges.

For Chimaroke’s family, they are inconsolable. They had watched him answer the nation’s call to serve with optimism, believing the one-year assignment would open another chapter in his life. Instead, it became his last journey.

As investigations continue, those who knew him say they seek only one thing: a full account of what happened in Nembe and the assurance that his death will not become another unresolved statistic. For them, justice would not erase the pain of losing a son, a friend, and a leader. It would, however, honour the memory of a young Nigerian whose commitment to service ended in circumstances that remain unexplained.
