Mbah approves distribution of 63,000 bags of fertilisers, farm inputs

Enugu State Governor has significantly scaled up its annual agricultural support programme, approving the free distribution of over 63,000 bags of organic and inorganic fertilisers and a wide range of agricultural inputs to registered farmers across the 17 local government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Agro-Industrialisation, Dr. Patrick Nwabueze Ubru, said the distribution, approved by Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah, underscores the administration’s commitment to food security, agricultural transformation, and improved livelihoods for farmers.

He disclosed that the programme would be officially flagged off on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at 9:00 am at Michael Okpara Square, Enugu.

In addition to fertilisers, registered farmers will receive agrochemicals, cassava stems, improved tomato, pepper, rice and maize seeds, as well as other essential agricultural inputs aimed at increasing productivity, boosting yields and strengthening food production across the state.

The 2026 intervention marks another major expansion of the state’s agricultural support programme under Governor Mbah.

In 2024, the administration distributed 12,000 bags of fertilisers alongside improved seedlings, cassava stems, herbicides, power tillers and other agricultural inputs as part of a comprehensive intervention valued at over N4.6 billion.

The programme benefited thousands of smallholder farmers and contributed to increased food production across the state.

Building on that success, the government expanded the programme in 2025, increasing the distribution to over 40,000 bags of fertilisers and extending support to more than 60,000 registered farmers across the 17 local government areas.

The intervention also included improved seeds, agrochemicals, cassava stems and mechanisation support. The state government attributed the expansion to the bumper harvests recorded under the previous exercise and its positive impact on food availability and the prices of staple crops.

This year’s programme represents the biggest intervention yet. With over 63,000 bags of fertilisers and an expanded package of agricultural inputs earmarked for registered farmers, the government aims to reach even more beneficiaries while accelerating agricultural productivity, improving rural incomes and consolidating Enugu State’s drive towards food sufficiency.

Ubru said shortlisted registered farmers would receive SMS notifications from ENSAgric inviting them to collect their allocated farm inputs. He urged all beneficiaries to attend the flag-off ceremony and take full advantage of the government’s intervention.

He reaffirmed that Governor Mbah’s administration remains committed to equipping farmers with the resources needed to increase production, create wealth, strengthen food security and position agriculture as a major driver of sustainable economic growth in Enugu State.
