The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rit. Hon Benjamin Kalu today,highlighted the 45 Constitution Alteration Bills currently before the National Assembly, to the European Union Heads of Mission at the reception hosted by the European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Amb. Gautier Mignot, at the EU Delegation Office.
Kalu who posted on his verified social media handle said that the 45 Constitution Alteration Bills covers critical areas such as State Police, local government autonomy, electoral reforms, women’s political inclusion through the Reserved Seats Bill, judicial reforms, citizenship, human rights, fiscal reforms, and other measures aimed at strengthening governance, accountability, and national development.
Kalu said that the strategic engagement with the European Union Heads of Mission reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to the strong and evolving partnership between her and the European Union.
He said such partnerships are built on shared democratic values, and a common commitment to strengthening institutions, deepening parliamentary diplomacy, expanding economic cooperation, and advancing sustainable development.
According to the Deputy Speaker, their discussions focused on the ongoing constitutional reform process being undertaken by the 10th House of Representatives, which seeks to ensure that our Constitution reflects the aspirations of Nigerians and addresses the realities of a modern, dynamic democracy.
“As these reforms progress through the legislative process, I reiterated the importance of sustained collaboration with our international partners.
“Through continued technical cooperation, knowledge sharing, and parliamentary engagement, we can build stronger democratic institutions and deliver a constitutional framework that promotes security, prosperity, justice, and greater opportunities for all Nigerians.”
