The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) continues to grapple with the fallout from its May 24, 2026 governorship primary election, an exercise that has attracted widespread criticism from party members and stakeholders.
Several party faithful have alleged on social media that no actual voting took place across the state’s 184 wards as required during the primary.
According to the allegations, results were instead compiled and announced by the state executive committee, led by the party chairman, in favour of Barr. Kelechi Anosike, a candidate many members claim was largely unknown within the party structure across the state.
It will be recalled that this medium previously reported on several controversies that allegedly occurred before, during, and after the governorship primary, based on observations and reports from wards across the 17 local government areas of the state.
In the weeks following the primary election, the PDP has witnessed a steady stream of resignations, with numerous members submitting resignation letters through their ward leadership. Many of them described the governorship primary as a charade that fell short of acceptable democratic standards.
The latest high-profile resignation came from Chief Kingsley Nna, popularly known as Okadigbo, a former stalwart of the party from Ukwa East Local Government Area.
In a resignation letter shared on his social media platforms, Nna cited the party’s inability to conduct a credible governorship primary as the reason for his departure.
Addressing the letter to the chairman of Ikwueke East Ward, Nna stated that the primary election was marred by corruption, electoral malpractice, imposition, and other undemocratic practices.
He argued that the conduct of the exercise undermined the principles of internal democracy, transparency, and justice upon which the PDP was founded.
Nna further stated that he had lost confidence in the current leadership of the PDP in Abia State, accusing it of failing to uphold fairness, equity, and the will of party members.
He concluded by passing a vote of no confidence on the present state leadership of the party and expressed appreciation to members of the PDP in Ikwueke East Ward for their support over the years, wishing them well in their future political endeavours.
