In a bold step toward modernizing public transportation and cutting carbon emissions, Governor Otti’s administration has announced the departure of a second batch of 20 electric buses from China to Abia State.
The Chief Press Secretary to Governor Alex Otti, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, said that this latest shipment will double the State’s green shuttle fleet to 40 buses before the end of next month, advancing Governor Otti’s plan to reform and transform the State Transportation ecosystem.
He explains that the electric bus programme is a key pillar of the Governor’s forward-thinking transformation of the State transport sector.
“It targets three goals: reduce urban air pollution, slash commuting costs for residents, and position Abia as a sub-national leader in Nigeria’s energy transition.”
According to Ukoha, the 40-bus fleet will serve major cities of Aba, Umuahia, Ohafia and extend to other routes and key intra-city corridors, with charging infrastructure already being installed at strategic terminals and points.
“Trained Abia drivers and technicians will operate and maintain the fleet, creating new green jobs in the process,” Ukoha said.
He added that by moving from fuel and diesel to electric, Abia is not just buying buses – it’s buying cleaner air, quieter cities, and lower transport fares.
“This is Governor Otti’s “Rebuild Abia” agenda on wheels,” Ukoha said.
