Governor Alex Otti has flagged off the construction of the 4.5-kilometre first phase of the Aba ring road across Osisioma, Aba North and South LGAs of the state.
Meanwhile, in continuation of the commissioning and flagging-off of projects as part of activities marking the third-year anniversary, Governor Otti also commissioned 13 newly constructed, including rehabilitated, roads, according to his CPS, Ukoha Njoku.
For the first phase of the Aba ring road project, which cuts across Umuaduru – Okpulo Umuobo in Osisioma LGA and is being handled by the Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Governor Otti said that the road is expected to create an alternative traffic route around Aba and support the government’s drive towards urban renewal and economic expansion.
Otti, who described the road as a strategic infrastructural initiative designed to decongest Aba, the commercial city, said that, on completion, the road would be an alternative road to bypass Aba city centre, adding that the road was conceived as part of efforts to tackle traffic congestion.
He further disclosed that the project is being inaugurated in line with his administration’s policy of ensuring that contractors commence work before formal project flag-off.
According to Otti, “The whole idea is to take traffic off Aba Metropolitan City. If you have no business inside Aba, then you don’t have to enter Aba to go to Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Obingwa and other parts of the state.
“That would reduce the congestion inside the town,” Gov. Otti stated.
“Before we flag off any project, we ensure that work has started, so I’m happy that we have started construction.”
Meanwhile, the roads commissioned include Aro Amano – Eke Aro Road; Adaelu Road Osisioma – Aba; Geometric Road Osisioma; Afule Road, Osisioma; Assemblies of God Church Road, Osisioma; Kingdom Hall Street, Nwogu Ajagba Street, Aba North; Nwala Street, Aba North; Sacred Heart Street, Aba South; Elizabeth Avenue, Aba North; Nigerian Brewery Ring Road, Aba North; Etche Road, Aba South; Mosque Road, Aba South; and Crystal Park Road, Aba South, while the first phase of the Aba ring road was flagged off for construction.
Speaking at the various spots where roads were commissioned and flagged off on Tuesday, May 26th, 2026, Governor Otti said that the road projects were aimed at easing traffic congestion within the Aba metropolis and improving connectivity to neighbouring states and communities.
While appreciating the quality of work done on the roads, the governor noted that the roads were done in line with specifications and said that they are for the use of all, adding that he is happy that the roads were done in line with his directives and the quality is as expected.
“Let me also say that this road is not particularly for anybody but Abia citizens.
“It gives me pleasure to have completed this road (geometric road).
“I was a witness to how bad it (geometric road) was. If you look to my right and to my left, you will see industries springing up,” Gov. Otti stated.
Governor Otti said that the Afule Road project in particular was strategically conceived to divert heavy traffic away from the commercial city, especially for travellers with no direct business within Aba township, adding that the road project would provide easier access for commuters travelling to Akwa Ibom State, Cross River State, Obingwa and other parts of the state without necessarily passing through the busy city centre.
“This (Afule Road) is a bypass that would reduce the pressure on the Aba-Owerri Road.
“The quality of the road is above standard, lined with street lights and drainage,” Gov. Otti stated.
