The Enugu State Government has announced the commencement of a special verification exercise for pensioners, retirees, newly employed civil servants, and next-of-kin who were unable to participate in previous exercises.

In a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, the government said the exercise is aimed at strengthening transparency, ensuring accurate record-keeping, and facilitating the prompt processing of legitimate entitlements.

The verification will cover four categories: new employee verification, pension verification, gratuity verification, and verification of next-of-kin of deceased retirees eligible for benefits.

DrumAfricanews reports that the exercise is scheduled to commence on Monday, May 18, 2026, at the Local Government Staff Pension Board in Enugu, with proceedings beginning at 8:00 am daily.

Pensioners and retirees undergoing gratuity verification are expected to participate between May 18 and May 22, while newly employed civil servants will be verified from May 25 to May 29.

Eligible participants include newly recruited staff in the state civil service, pensioners who missed earlier verification exercises, retirees awaiting gratuity payments, and Next-of-Kin of deceased retirees entitled to benefits.

The government directed pensioners, retirees, and Next-of-Kin to present relevant documents, including notice of retirement, pension identification, BVN, NIN, bank statements, and, where applicable, death certificates and letters of administration.

Similarly, newly employed staff are required to present documents such as letters of appointment and confirmation, academic qualifications, BVN, NIN, and other supporting credentials.

The state government emphasized that all participants must appear in person and warned that any attempt at double verification would be treated as fraud, with possible sanctions including forfeiture of entitlements.

It further clarified that only individuals who were unable to participate in previous exercises should attend, noting that those who have already completed verification and received full benefits are exempt.

The government also advised beneficiaries who have received partial payments to provide evidence and declare all prior payments, while urging all participants to ensure their bank details are accurate and active.

For enquiries or clarification, the government provided a helpline, 0916-810-1470, and email contact, enuguverify@gmail.com, for support.

Reaffirming its commitment to accountability and efficiency, the Enugu State Government assured that the exercise is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that all legitimate beneficiaries receive their entitlements in a timely and orderly manner.
