Imo State is firmly placed at the top of the labour hierarchy in Nigeria with a new wage ranking as the cost of living continues to shape the political discourse in 2026.
From the data obtained by DrumAfricanews as compiled in April 2026 by a leading Nigerian financial media and data intelligence company, Nairamatics, Governor Hope Uzodimma has positioned the state as the best-paying sub-national entity for civil servants and medical professionals in Nigeria.
As many states in Nigeria are still struggling to implement the ₦70,000 National Minimum Wage Act signed in 2024, Imo State has more than doubled that figure, with the promise to even go higher.
The federal minimum wage officially remains ₦70,000, a benchmark many states are only just meeting, while others are yet to fully comply. In contrast, Imo State has set a new pace entirely.
Economists suggest that Governor Uzodimma is investing heavily in human capital to drive economic growth.
For the workers of Imo, the message is clear: the “Rehabilitation” phase of the 3R agenda (Reconstruction, Rehabilitation, and Recovery) now comes with a very hefty paycheck .
As of the April 2026 data, Imo Minimum Wage: ₦104,000 (Up from ₦76,000). Federal Minimum Wage: ₦70,000. This makes Imo the only state in the South-East and one of the few in the nation to breach the ₦100,000 ceiling, placing it ahead of Lagos and Rivers States, which hover in the ₦85,000 range .
In a move aimed at stopping the exodus of medical talent (the ‘Japa’ syndrome), Governor Uzodimma approved a minimum wage of ₦503,000 for medical doctors, a staggering figure, very intimidating considering what is obtainable elsewhere.
This figure is nearly seven times the federal baseline, making Imo a safe haven for healthcare workers seeking financial security, while entry-level lecturers in tertiary institutions now have a minimum wage of approximately ₦222,000.
