The Deputy Speaker of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Benjamin Okezie Kalu, has described former Abia State Governor, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu, as a rare leader who gave room for free speech and respected opposition voices while in power.
Speaking through a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, on the occasion of Ikpeazu’s 61st birthday, Kalu showered praises on the former governor for creating a peaceful atmosphere during his administration.
“Ikpeazu’s government accommodated opposing views and upheld the principles of free speech, allowing critics to express themselves without fear of persecution,” Kalu said.
Kalu, who also hails from Abia State, described the ex-governor as a humble and listening leader whose style of governance endeared him to the people.
During his time in office (2015–2023), Ikpeazu was often praised for not engaging in political witch-hunts or clamping down on dissent. Unlike some of his counterparts who frequently silenced critics, Ikpeazu maintained a calm and open-door approach, particularly with journalists, opposition politicians, and civil society groups.
Political observers in the South East remember his tenure for its relatively low political tension, a rare feat in a region known for heated political rivalries.
Kalu also commended the former governor for making “significant strides in infrastructure development”, saying that his administration laid the groundwork for long-term growth in Abia.
As Ikpeazu celebrates another year, Kalu urged younger leaders to learn from his legacy of tolerance, humility, and vision-driven leadership.
