Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Benjamin Okezie Kalu, PhD, CFR, says investing in people is the surest way to grow Nigeria’s economy and unlock Africa’s digital future.
Speaking at SMFest 2025 in Owerri , a global conference that inspires young people to use technology and innovation to grow their businesses, Kalu said that building the skills and knowledge of citizens directly drives innovation, productivity, and national development.
He commended the convener, Ajah Excel, and the SMFest team for their visionary work, which he said has empowered thousands of young Nigerians to turn passion into purpose and ideas into action.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Africa Unlocked: Leading the Digital Revolution,” the Deputy Speaker said Africa’s future depends not only on technology but on young people with the courage to create solutions that change lives.
Quoting reports that Nigeria raised over $331.6 million in tech funding, Kalu said it proves that Nigerians remain among the most creative and resilient innovators on the continent. He called for more investment not just in internet access but in creativity, skills, and human capacity.
Kalu also shared personal lessons from his journey in leadership, telling participants that true leadership begins when one takes responsibility, not when one gains a title.
“The future belongs to those who dare to dream and build,” he said.
“Technology alone doesn’t change nations — people do. Let’s ensure that every young Nigerian, from the trader in Aba to the student in Sokoto, is part of this digital revolution.”
He assured that his office and the National Assembly will continue to support platforms like SMFest that equip young people with the tools to shape Africa’s future.
