The Abia State Council of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has distanced itself from a protest allegedly held at the Government House, Umuahia, by individuals claiming to represent the union.
In a disclaimer issued on Friday, the NLC State Chairman, Comrade Okoro Ogbonnaya, said the protest was orchestrated by impostors who falsely used his name to cause unrest over the implementation of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS) for health workers in the state.
Comrade Ogbonnaya clarified that he did not lead or authorize any protest related to CONHESS payments, stressing that the NLC leadership remains committed to maintaining a cordial working relationship with the Abia State Government.
“I have never led any group of protesters to the Government House on any issue concerning CONHESS,” he stated, urging the public to disregard any publication or report suggesting otherwise.
He further emphasized that the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN) Abia State Council is legitimately led by Comrade Solomon Offor, adding that there is no parallel executive within the union.
Ogbonnaya noted that both the NLC and MHWUN chairmen are working collaboratively to ensure that health workers receive their approved CONHESS salaries in accordance with agreements reached between the union and the state government.
He also commended Comrade Offor and the Abia State Commissioner for Health for their efforts in pursuing the resolution of outstanding salary issues.
The NLC chairman, therefore, called on the public and media organizations, particularly Magic FM Aba, to verify information before publication to avoid being misled by individuals seeking to create confusion within the labour movement.
