The Labour Party (LP) has lost one of its biggest political figures in Enugu State as Senator Kelvin Chukwu announced his move to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Chukwu, who represents Enugu East Senatorial District, broke the news on Wednesday during a town hall meeting in his Amuri community, Nkanu West LGA. The senator told his constituents that the endless crisis tearing the Labour Party apart has left him with no option but to seek a more stable platform.
APC Gains Strength in South-East
Chukwu’s defection is a significant win for the APC in Enugu, a state traditionally dominated by the PDP. With Labour Party battling leadership disputes and PDP facing its own internal struggles, APC is steadily positioning itself as the next rallying point in the South-East.
The event, which held at the village market square, drew political heavyweights including the immediate past APC chairman in the state, Dr. Ben Nwoye, traditional rulers and community leaders.
Addressing the gathering, Chukwu reassured his people that his move would not affect his performance at the National Assembly.
“I will not let you down,” he pledged, insisting that joining APC was in the best interest of his constituency.
The senator also revealed that he will make a formal declaration on the floor of the Senate once plenary resumes.
