Former Kaduna Central senator, Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at ex-governor Nasir el-Rufai, accusing him of never fighting for democracy and ruling with arrogance.
Speaking on TVC’s Politics Tonight on Monday, Sani said el-Rufai has been “angry and frustrated” since leaving office in 2023, stressing that the former governor benefitted from the system without making personal sacrifices.
“For people like Nasir, when they found themselves in the position of office, they don’t know what democracy is all about because they didn’t fight for it,” Sani said.
The former lawmaker recalled his own struggles during the fight for democracy, noting that unlike el-Rufai, he spent years in prison, endured torture and wore chains as a political prisoner.
“I have been through the rough times of my life. I have been through many prisons, many police stations. I wore prison uniform, I wore leg chain, I wore handcuffs as a political prisoner fighting for this democracy that is 25 years old,” he said.
Sani accused el-Rufai of ruling with arrogance, describing him as a politician who wanted to maintain control in Kaduna and at the federal level but failed.
“He had this high sense of entitlement that he would have a governor he could manipulate in Kaduna. That failed. He thought he would remain in the federal cycle of power. That also failed. And now he has returned to mischief,” Sani added.
Over the weekend, el-Rufai alleged that suspected thugs who invaded the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition meeting in Kaduna were sponsored by the government.
