Remedy Yange, an operative of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in Benue state, has been found dead on a street in Lagos two weeks after another was shot and killed by a suspected Yahoo boy in Onitsha, Anambra.
A video that began circulating online on Monday shows that the latest death victim, who was not in uniform, slumped and died in an undisclosed part of Lagos on Sunday, an incident confirmed by the EFCC.
The video showed his lifeless body surrounded by sympathisers, including police officers who coordinated a search of his bag.
It was discovered through his identity card that he was an officer of the EFCC.
“He works with EFCC. His ID card is with him,” a voice said in the video.
The late operative was reportedly on leave from work to spend time with his family in Lagos.
Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson, confirming the incident disclosed that the officer’s death was under investigation.
“Yes, the man is our officer. His death is being investigated. The incident happened on Sunday,” Oyewale said.
This is the second time an EFCC operative’s death has been reported in recent times.
On January 19, the agency said Aminu Salisu, an assistant superintendent officer (ASO), was killed in Anambra.
Salisu was allegedly killed by Joshua Ikechukwu, a suspected internet fraudster, during an operation in Anambra.
Oyewale said the late officer was killed while discharging a legitimate duty.
He said the suspect, who spotted investigators via closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras mounted at his doorstep, refused to open his door despite their “polite request for entrance”.
The EFCC spokesperson said preliminary investigations showed that Ikechukwu was involved in coding and online medical supplies of doubtful legitimacy.
