Abia State Government has announced plans to recruit over 2,000 teachers for primary and secondary schools across the state.
The Commissioner for Information and Culture, Prince Okey Kanu, made this announcement during a press briefing on Tuesday at the Government House in Umuahia.
Recall that the Abia State Ministry of Basic Education, under the current administration, had established the enforcement of free and compulsory education in the state, with the appointment of education marshals to ensure that no child of school age is outside the school environment during school hours.
According to Prince Kanu, “The Abia State Ministry of Basic Education has fully commenced with the enforcement of the Out-of-School Children Policy Initiative of His Excellency, Dr. Alex Otti, with the appointment of education marshals.
“These marshals are the people who will enforce this policy, and they will be assisted by the Harmonized Tax Force; stakeholders in our communities, the security agencies, and the judiciary will be involved in the enforcement of this very important policy of the state government.”
The information commissioner also made it known that the state government has introduced a mathematics clinic that will run from Tuesdays to Thursdays to enhance the teaching of mathematics.
“This will help to strengthen the STEM project of our schools, as mathematics, we know, is very basic and central to the realization of the STEM subjects.
“STEM subjects, of course, refer to science, technology, engineering, and mathematics subjects, which, of course, are the bedrock for the development of science and technology, and the Honourable Commissioner for Education will throw more light on that,” he said.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Mr. Goodluck Ubochi, stated that the recruitment process will be done online. He announced the state government’s plans to employ about 2,000 teachers to cover the gap in the system.
The commissioner further explained that the online platform will be opened for applications soon.
“We want to ensure that the recruitment process is transparent and fair,” Ubochi said.
The recruitment drive is part of the state government’s efforts to revamp the education sector and provide quality education to students in Abia State.
