…’the 9th House of Representatives is committed to the independence and freedom of the press.’

The Spokesperson, House of Representatives and Chairman, House Committee on Media and Public Affairs Rep. Benjamin Kalu commemorates the World Press Freedom Day.

The representative in a press statement released today, May 3rd 2021 highlighted that the world press freedom is a day set aside to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate press freedom around the world, defend the media from attacks on their independence and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the profession.

He mentioned that it serves as a reminder to the government of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

To mark this day with the theme ‘Information for Public Good’, he reiterated that it is important that the press also recognize their role in the society.

The Spokesperson added that the 9th House of Representatives stands for freedom speech, recognizes the value of the fourth realm to our democracy especially in times like this.

WORLD PRESS FREEDOM DAY

Information is power and a tool that can change the world.
Today, May 3rd, is a day initiated by the United Nations to celebrate the fundamental principles of press freedom, evaluate press freedom around the world, defend the media and pay tribute to journalists who have lost their lives in the exercise of their profession.

It serves as a reminder to the government of the need to respect their commitment to press freedom and also a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics.

This year, as we commemorate this day with the theme ‘Information for public good’, It is important that we understand and appreciate the role of the press in the society. We also remember all press men and journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. May they find rest.

The 9th House of Representatives stands for freedom speech, recognizes the value of the fourth estate of the realm to our democracy even in times like this and remain committed to protecting free speech and independence of the media and its journalists.
