There was widespread excitement among Ekiti State workers on Tuesday as they began receiving alerts for the December salary reflecting the N70,000 new minimum wage. A group, the University of Abuja Concerned Alumni Comrades, has opposed the Nigerian government’s plan to rename the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University. In a statement by its coordinator, Ogunwoye Samson, the group asked the government to reverse the decision. “The proposed name change is seen as an affront to our collective identity and history,” the statement reads in part. The Federal Executive Council on Monday approved the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University. The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this to State House correspondents following the council’s last meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja. The Supreme Court, has dismissed a suit seeking to sack President Bola Tinubu from office. The apex court on Monday in a unanimous decision by a five-member panel of justices, awarded a fine of N5 million against the plaintiff, Chief Ambrose Owuru, who was the presidential candidate of the Hope Democratic Party, HDP, in the 2019 general election. Nigeria’s inflation rate increased to 34.6% in November 2024, up from 33.8% in October, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report, released on Monday, highlights a 0.72% rise in inflation within a month. The NBS reported a significant year-on-year increase of 6.4 percentage points compared to the 28.2% inflation rate recorded in November 2023.
