The Ahiaba Ubi community in the Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State have called on the Abia State Police Command to ensure that Mr Chukwudi AKA Evergreen is prosecuted for an alleged involvement in illicit drug peddling.
DrumAfricanews reports that some indigenous people of Ahiaba Ubi, under the aegis of ‘concerned citizen of Ahiaba Ubi’, approached newsmen in Aba Monday, 21st September, 2026, alleging that the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Olokoro, on Thursday, 17th September, 2026, arrested a notorious drug kingpin that has been terrorising their community.
According to them, they have been crying and writing petitions to several security agencies, including anti-drug authorities, but none had ever tried to effect the arrest of the suspect popularly known as Oga Chukwudi or “Evergreen”, whom they said has introduced all sorts of violent crimes in their community.
The concerned indigenes of Ahiaba Ubi told the newsmen that they had to approach the following unconfirmed reports that some powerful people were trying to secure the release of “Mr Evergreen” from detention at VCRU Olokoro, a move they said will endanger their own lives, especially some of them who aided the police to ensure his arrest.
They lamented that despite all pieces of evidence and the high volume of drugs he was arrested with, including methamphetamine (Mkpuru Mmiri), cocaine, tramadol and other prohibited substances, some powerful people are having a clandestine plot to secure his release and have him continue to terrorise them.
“Activities of Mr Evergreen have turned the Ahiaba Ubi community and its environs into a criminal hideout for criminals that raped young ladies and robbed innocent citizens of their properties after taking those drugs.
“The effects of these criminals’ activities have caused many youths around the affected communities to be causing nuisance, breaking into people’s houses, and stealing farm products from innocent citizens, as some sold their aged parents’ properties, especially lands, to get money and keep taking those drugs.
“The situation has become unbearable, and we can’t continue to fold our hands. Why are our youths being destroyed every day because of illicit drugs?
“We’ve always told the police and all authorities that we’re ready to identify houses and hideouts of members of this syndicate for apprehension and possible prosecution.
“Now that apprehension has taken place, what we’re calling for is prosecution. Nothing should be done behind the back. Let the world know that such a person was arrested and prosecuted so that anyone who wants to try such will learn a lesson.
“It’s unfortunate we’re hearing a different story now and we’re begging the Abia State Police Command, especially our hardworking Commissioner of police to please save the people of Ahiaba Ubi by ensuring that only the law is obeyed and not the will of any man in this case,” a member of the concerned indigenes of Ahiaba Ubi who pleaded anonymity said.
Another member of the group said, “Our has warned Evergreen on several occasions to desist from the illicit drug business, that we don’t want hard drug peddling in our community,” but he refused to stop the business and even boasted of his contacts with men that matter in Abia state.
“He aligned with the support of one Mr Lucky and his group, who they said connected him to people he settled with the drugs and money to continue with the business. The same Mr Lock whom we’re hearing has promised to bail him at any place he may be arrested.
“We have observed the enormous teenage life and values destruction his drug business has brought to the community and cried out to the anti-drug agency on several occasions to arrest and prosecute him, but how he walks out from the agency is a surprise to us.
“Upon a series of findings, we decided to invite a strong unit of Abia State Police Command VCRU led by one CSP Obinna who is their leader. They arrested Evergreen and recovered huge grams of cocaine, heroin, bags of cannabis sativa, Mkpuru Miri, loud, etc., as we were told.
“We’ve been celebrating since that arrest, until we now heard the shocking news from some of his loyalists that he’ll return soon, as Mr Lucky, whom they said is powerful, and others are currently pushing for his release, but the police have refused and maintained that the case will be charged to court soon.”
The community said that they need even the state government to take the matter seriously, because letting such notorious people off the hook will embolden others that violent crimes pay.
When contacted Maureen Chinaka, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Abia State,did not pick up her calls nor respond to messages sent to her mobile number.
