The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has taken a decisive leap in its global internationalization drive by cementing a major academic partnership with Canada’s University of Waterloo and securing a fully-funded international PhD scholarship for a staff member.
DrumAfricanews reports that both achievements stem directly from recent strategic diplomatic engagements spearheaded by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Simon Uchenna Ortuanya.
As gathered, on Monday, August 3, Prof. Ortuanya hosted a four-member delegation from the University of Waterloo at the Vice-Chancellor’s Conference Room, culminating in the formal signing of a historic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
The agreement established a framework for joint research initiatives, staff and student exchanges, and capacity-building programs across key discipline areas.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Ortuanya revealed that the pact was the direct result of proactive outreach he initiated shortly after taking office as the Vice-Chancellor of UNN.
”I was barely three months in office when I visited the University of Waterloo. I am happy that the journey I made is bearing fruits of partnership today.”
“By this agreement, we are telling the world that we are now one in research, innovation, and partnership. Both staff and students of UNN can now consider the University of Waterloo as an extension of their institution, and vice versa, ” the Vice-Chancellor said.
Prof. Ortuanya emphasised that the partnership aligns with UNN’s core mandate, “To Restore the Dignity of Man,” by equipping the university community to compete on the global stage.
Leader of the Canadian delegation, Grant Leach, praised the university’s vision, noting that the University of Waterloo looks forward to leveraging the mutual synergy to advance high-impact research and academic innovations.
The Canadian partnership came on the heels of another significant breakthrough resulting from Prof. Ortuanya’s recent diplomatic mission to the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Abuja.
Engr. Henry Ikemefuna Ugwu, a lecturer in UNN’s Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering, has been awarded a fully funded PhD scholarship by the Chinese Government.
Engr. Ugwu will pursue advanced doctoral research in Computer Science and Technology at the Hunan University in China.
The scholarship is one the early yields of high-level talks in Abuja between the Vice-Chancellor and Chinese diplomatic envoys, which focused on technology transfer, scholarship opportunities and institutional research exchanges.
The MoU signing ceremony was attended by UNN principal officers, key staff members, and the visiting international delegates from Canada.
