National Assembly Extends Recess, Moves Resumption to October 7

The National Assembly has moved forward its official resumption date, shifting plenary sessions from September 23 to October 7, 2025.

The announcement was contained in a statement released in Abuja by the Clerk to the National Assembly, Kamoru Ogunlana, on Tuesday. He explained that the new date was directed by the presiding officers of both chambers.

“The resumption date of the National Assembly earlier scheduled for Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, is postponed to Tuesday, 7th October, 2025,” the notice read.

    Committees to Keep Working

While plenary sittings are on hold, standing and ad-hoc committees of the Senate and House of Representatives will continue their legislative activities. The Clerk urged lawmakers to adjust their schedules to the new date and apologised for any inconvenience.

Lawmakers had gone on their annual recess on July 23, after concluding the second legislative quarter. Traditionally, the National Assembly goes on recess at least three times a year; Easter, mid-year (longest), and Christmas with each break lasting weeks. This latest extension means plenary will now resume for the last quarter of the year in October, cutting close to the budget presentation period when President Bola Tinubu is expected to lay the 2026 Appropriation Bill before the legislature.
