Vice President Kashim Shettima, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has paid a condolence visit to the family of late former President Muhammadu Buhari in London, following the elder statesman’s death in a UK hospital on Sunday.
This was revealed in a statement issued on Monday by Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications, Office of the Vice President, Stanley Nkwocha.
Upon his arrival in the British capital on Monday morning, the Vice President met with members of the bereaved Buhari family to convey the President’s heartfelt condolences and solidarity during their time of grief.
Shettima also visited Malam Mamman Daura, a close confidant and nephew of the late President, who is currently recuperating in a London hospital.
The visits were undertaken as Vice President Shettima led a high-powered presidential delegation ahead of the formal repatriation of President Buhari’s remains to Nigeria.
The Vice President is expected to accompany the late President’s body home once the ongoing procedures and documentation are concluded.
The delegation includes the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; the Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar; and the Deputy Chief of Staff to the President, Senator Ibrahim Hassan Hadejia.
The death of former President Buhari has drawn an outpouring of tributes from across Nigeria and the international community.
President Tinubu had on Sunday announced the former leader’s passing and ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast in honour of his service and legacy.
