Senator Iyiola Omisore, a prominent figure in Osun politics and the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially announced his plans to contest the 2026 Osun State governorship election. The former deputy governor shared the news via his official X handle on Saturday.
Omisore revealed that his formal declaration ceremony will take place on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Osun APC Secretariat in Ogo-Oluwa, Osogbo, starting at 10 a.m. His campaign theme, “Fix the Broken, Restore Our Dreams,” signals his focus on revitalizing the state’s fortunes.
In his announcement, Omisore called on the people of Osun to join his “Osun Rescue Mission 2026,” emphasizing a shared commitment to good governance, development, and brighter prospects for all.
“My beloved people of Osun State, after deep reflection and wide consultations, I have decided to formally declare my intention to contest for the Governor of Osun State in 2026 under our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC),” he said.
He stressed that his bid is not a solo mission but a collective journey towards rebuilding the state.
Omisore’s Political Journey
Omisore’s political career spans over two decades. He served as Deputy Governor of Osun State from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy (AD). He later became Senator representing Osun East from 2003 to 2011, where he chaired the influential Senate Appropriations Committee.
In 2014, Omisore contested the Osun governorship election on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket but lost to then-incumbent Governor Rauf Aregbesola. He later switched to the Social Democratic Party (SDP), contesting the 2018 governorship race before finally joining the APC in 2021.
His political comeback was swift. By 2022, he emerged as APC National Secretary at the party’s national convention in Abuja, cementing his role as a key player in Nigerian politics.
Omisore is now widely viewed as one of the frontline aspirants to clinch the APC ticket for Osun’s 2026 governorship election.
