An explosive audio recording has emerged claiming a standing order to kill human-rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore whenever he is sighted in Lagos.
The man speaking, identified as Timileyin Ishola Olafimihan (aka “Is Nothing”), allegedly warned that “the boys have been mobilised and paid to do the job”.
According to the voice, “If they catch Sowore, these people are not police, they are thugs. They are planning to kill him anywhere they see him.” The recording further cautioned supporters and activists not to accompany him on his next trip to Lagos.
Olafimihan, when contacted, denied any assassination plan, saying the message was “just a joke” and taken out of context.
The alleged plot surfaces against the backdrop of major demolitions in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos State. Hundreds of residents have been displaced after the destruction of more than 70 houses despite a subsisting court injunction.
Sowore has been actively involved in protests against the demolitions, arguing they violate citizens’ rights and proper due process. His involvement has placed him in a sharper clash with the authorities.
On Monday, the Lagos State Police Command, through Commissioner Olohundare Jimoh, officially declared Sowore wanted for allegedly plotting to obstruct traffic on the Third Mainland Bridge and cause public disorder. Thirteen suspects have reportedly been arrested in connection with the planned action.
Legal practitioners have condemned the “wanted” declaration as a breach of due process, pointing out that only a court – not a police commissioner can declare a citizen wanted.
