A witness of the federal government testifying in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), says Simon Ekpa would soon be extradited from Finland to Nigeria to face trial for supporting the defendant.
The witness, simply identified as “AAA” and a staff of the Department of States Services (DSS), was part of the team that arrested Kanu on October 15, 2015, at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Lagos.
Under cross-examination by the defendant’s lawyer, Kanu Agabi, the witness said that although he is not aware of other supporters facing trial for agitating for a Biafran nation, Ekpa has been arrested and is facing extradition for supporting the movement and “inciting violence”.
The witness also confirmed that no weapon of violence was found in the defendant’s custody at the time of arrest in 2015.
He also said the lady found in Kanu’s hotel room was not believed to be a suspect after proving that she met the defendant on social media.
“The lady was adjudged to be innocent,” the witness said.
The DSS officer said although he carried out an analysis on Kanu’s phone, the findings was not tendered as part of the evidence in court because “it was considered immaterial to the case”.
The witness also admitted that Kanu’s statement was obtained without the presence of his lawyer.
He admitted not knowing any person put on trial by the federal government on account of agitation from the Biafran nation.
Further hearing has been adjourned to May 6, 7 and 8, 2025.
