Barely eight months to their wedding, Mrs Sarah Innocent has allegedly killed her husband, Mr Innocent Nwaorji, in his sleep over a dispute said to be phone related.
The ugly incident which took place around past 10PM on Saturday, 8th of August, 2026, in their residence at Ohuru-Isimmiri community, Obingwa LGA, Abia State, saw the suspect arrested by the police while an effort to save her husband was on.
The couple whose wedding took place at the popular St Michael’s Anglican Cathedral on the 12th of December were wrongly adjudged by many as happily married, but unknown to all, the cracks on the wall were huge.
Younger brother to the late Mr Innocent Nworji, Mr Nnadozie Samuel Nworji, the younger brother of the late Mr Innocent Nworji, while narrating what happened to his brother, said that it was the priest in charge of their church that informed him that his brother had an issue with the wife that night.
“On Saturday night, the 8th of August, around past 10 pm, a call came to my phone. When I checked it, it was from their priest. When I picked up the call, he told me that my brother had a serious issue with his wife to the extent that his wife used a kitchen knife on him.
“I thought it was a minor issue, but however, I set out despite the difficulties that night. When I got to that place, I saw no one, so I had to move to the Ohuru Isimmiri police station, and it was already 12 midnight. It was when I got there that a certain police man told me that they had carried my brother to the SDA Hospital.”
According to him, another police officer who was part of those that saw his brother’s corpse narrated to him how he was rejected by both the SDA Hospital and Living Word Hospital and was later declared dead by a doctor at the Teaching Hospital, from where his corpse was brought back and deposited at the SDA Hospital Mortuary.
Mr Nnadozie said that his late elder brother, who married his wife, Serah, an indigene of Uzoabam, was a well-respected man in their community in Osisioma Ngwa LGA and was never known for violence.
He, however, said he was shocked when he got to the police station the next day to see Serah, who was narrating a story of how his brother used to beat her, which he said sounded strange to him.
Nnadozie said that the most shocking thing again was that it was still the Serah who allegedly killed her husband and shouted and alerted her neighbours and landlord that she had killed her husband before they invited the police and started seeking how to save him, which later proved abortive.
“The next day, I went to see the wife, Mrs Serah Innocent, from Uzoabam at the station. Her narrative was not clear; she was just telling me that the husband used to beat her.
“They wedded since last year, December; that’s December 2025. She told me that the same day he was killed, they had some misunderstanding concerning pressing the phone in the night. My brother cautioned her and told her the phone was disturbing him.
“She later took the earpiece, according to her. She was the one that alerted the neighbours when she had stabbed her husband and saw the terrible condition he was in.
“It was their landlord who now alerted the police, who took her away while trying with the help of neighbours to save the husband to no avail.”
Confirming the incident, Abia State Police Command, in a statement by Police Public Relations Officer Maureen Chinaka, said the command received a report of the incident at the Ohuru Isimiri Police Divisional Headquarters.
Chinaka said, “We received a report at the Ohuru Isimiri Police Divisional Headquarters on 09/08/2026 that, on 08/08/2026, Mrs Serah Innocent of Ohuru Isimmiri Village allegedly stabbed her husband in the chest with a kitchen knife during a misunderstanding.
“The victim was rushed to the hospital, where he was confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
“The scene of the crime has been visited, the corpse deposited at the mortuary for autopsy, and the suspect is currently in police custody.
“Discreet investigation is ongoing at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID).”
