The Kebbi State Government has refuted claims that the state has a high number of registered homosexuals and lesbians, specifically 15,979 and 18,567 respectively.
Governor Nasir Idris, while reacting to a sermon delivered at an Islamic gathering by Dr. Nasir Kigo, the Permanent Secretary of the Cabinet Office in Birnin Kebbi, dismissed the figures as baseless and lacking any supporting evidence.
The governor expressed his disapproval of the statistics attributed to the permanent secretary, stating, “After thorough investigation, the government discovered that it was false information. Therefore, we are calling on the general public to disregard this piece of information because it lacks merit.”
Idris further announced that the government would take action against the permanent secretary for originating the unsubstantiated figures.
It will be recalled that the permanent secretary reportedly delivered a lecture during an Islamic gathering, the content of which was later circulated on Facebook.
During the lecture, he allegedly claimed that the initial census revealed Sokoto State had 9,978 registered members practising homosexuality, placing it second in the federation.
He also stated that Sokoto had 10,456 registered lesbians, ranking third nationally.
