The National Economic Council has set up a special committee to look into ways of diversifying the generation of electricity in Nigeria.

The Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, disclosed this while briefing Journalists at the end of this month’s meeting of the Council, presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima.

He said the intention is to empower States and regions towards meeting their specific electricity needs.
The Ondo State Governor said the council took the decision after it was briefed by the Managing Director of the country’s Rural Electrification Agency on the National Electrification Strategy and Implementation Plan.

He said the council was convinced that there is a need for States and regions to begin their own generation to meet specific needs.
“The Council resolved that Nigeria needs a reformed and diversified electricity system apart from the one from the national grid. It further observed that by empowering States, accessibility and affordability of electricity can be enabled.

“As well as ensure that all regions can effectively meet their specific energy needs,” the Governor stated.
Governor Aiyedatiwa further disclosed that a committee on national electrification was set up by the council, under the leadership of Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu.
