The member representing Bende Federal Constituency and the Spokesperson of the House of Representatives Rep. Benjamin Kalu has called for an end to the shoot at sight order given by the Inspector General of Police, IGP. Usman Alkali baba.

The representative made this statement while speaking on his weekly program ‘Ben Kalu’s Mandate’ where he mentioned that the order only puts the lives of innocent citizens at risk as this does not give room for proper investigation before any killings are justified. He also added that this would give rise to extra judicial killings without proper monitoring. According to him;

 ‘I am not comfortable with the ‘Shoot at Sight’ order from the IGP to the south-eastern region, this order has not been issued in any other parts of the country but the south-eastern region and without proper monitoring it will be abused by those carrying out this order and I am yet to see a mechanism in place to monitor those who have been given this order. This is a very dangerous order and will turn the region into a war zone as innocent persons are bound to be killed. This would be a scourge of extrajudicial  killing. This is to be condemned in any democratic government.’

He condemned the youths who take part in the destruction of properties adding that they were built by the struggles and contributions of south-easterners and handed over to the government.

He called on the IGP to have a reconsideration to this order as the nation finds it’s way to solving the problem of insecurity currently ravaging the country. He urged the youths of Bende and South Eastern Nigeria to remain calm and continue to maintain law and order as citizens of Nigeria.
