The Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, has said Nigeria is already reaping the benefits of its military partnership with China.

Speaking at an event marking the 76th anniversary of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos on Tuesday, Obasa noted that Chinese support; from training to local arms production is helping Nigeria tackle insecurity.

According to him, the collaboration is not only improving Nigeria’s defense capacity but also contributing to regional stability across Africa.

Strengthened Bilateral Ties

Obasa recalled the recent high-level engagements between President Bola Tinubu and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, describing it as a “new historical starting point” for both nations. He said their agreement to expand cooperation was a boost for China-Africa relations, especially in security and economic growth.

China has been a consistent partner to Nigeria, not just in defense but also in development projects. In Lagos alone, Obasa highlighted, Chinese investments have shaped the city’s infrastructure – from roads and bridges to the railway system, easing transportation and opening new economic opportunities.

Beyond Military Support

The Lagos Speaker said China’s role in Nigeria’s growth extends beyond weapons and training. “The upgraded military partnership is already bearing fruit. At the same time, Lagos has witnessed remarkable growth through significant Chinese investments in roads, bridges, and rail systems that continue to enhance our economy,” he said.

For many Nigerians, China’s visible footprints in infrastructure, alongside military support reflect how global partnerships are reshaping the country’s development drive.
